New Year, New Dreams

Happy New Year!  We had a wonderful and busy holiday season.  One of the things I'm so thankful for, was a bit of time for reflection.  I don't typically make resolutions because I never end up seeing them through, but this year I've decided to make one.  My resolution is to redirect energy towards the things I love, like drawing.  As such I'll be spending a little less time here, and more time on my art.  I would be so honoured if you'd follow along with me on my facebook or instagram pages.  What's inspiring you this year?

Wishing you a fantastic 2015 filled with the things that make you happy.  xo

Workin It

Each year my work place puts on a social gathering after our business planning session.  The event (and budget) varies year to year. In years past we've organized 'The Amazing Race' in a public park, gone bowling, gone to Dave and Buster's, and this year... we went to Prom.

Upon arrival at the rooftop bar everyone received either a corsage or a boutonnière.  I was very impressed with the work the committee put into this one!  There was food, drinks, a candy buffet, a crepe station, old highschool photos of the staff (to guess who's who), and what I couldn't afford at my own wedding... a photobooth!

My team and I had lots of fun taking pictures, but it's not really fair to post pictures of people without their approval, so I'm just going to show you cropped versions.  Sorry!

Lots of fun this year.  Does your workplace do anything social?

Butternut Squash Soup

As the leaves start to change colour, I decided to make a large batch of squash soup.  I love butternut squash soup because not only does it taste delicous, but it freezes spectacularly.  Anytime I can stockpile my freezer for busier days, I'm all for it.

1. Heat oven to 425F.  Slice squash lengthwise and place on a baking sheet cut side up.  Brush with butter, salt and pepper, cover with foil.  Roast for 1 hour.

2. Coarsely chop red bell pepper, onion, and potato.

3. Remove squash from oven and let cool.  Scoop squash (using large spoon) into a large pot. Add chopped vegetables, and 7 cups of water.

4. Bring to a boil, cover and simmer for 30 minutes

5. Purée using an immersion blender.

6. Add milk.

7. Add sugar, salt, pepper and thyme to taste.
(Note: For an extra delicious version, use cream instead of milk and add 1 tbsp of butter)

Happy Fall!

Tashi Chevron Necklace

My love for necklaces continues.  The other week I wrote about one of my favourite statement necklaces.  Today, I want to share my latest splurge which is this super dainty sterling silver piece by Tashi.  It’s brilliant silver with understated Swarovski crystals and chevron shape give the perfect touch of added interest to any outfit, without competing for attention.  Close up product image can be found here.

Time for a change

They say change be-gets change.  Well one month ago we were restructured at work which meant a new role and new team for me.  At the same time, I had a lot going on at home and I just felt like I was in need of a change.  A fresh start.  A reset button.

Coupling that with the fact that my hair had been bothering me for some time (increasingly breaking, getting caught on things, being a poofy frizz ball... just being a general pain in my tush) I decided to go in for a cut.

I went in with this inspiration shot, but asking that the back be kept a bit longer.  I had a good 2 minute conversation with the stylist who repeated my request back to me and all seemed good.  I knew it would be much shorter than my typical chest-length mane, but to me the photo reads shoulder length. Then came the first chop, and suddenly I could feel the cool air on the back of my neck.  Too short!  But once you start there's no going back.  So I've spent the last month learning to rock this new, very short, bob.  And you know what?  I'm kind of digging it.  Kind of.

Pop of colour

As someone who works in an office environment, I wear a lot of suits and it can get pretty dull. When I came across this unusual, very splashy top, I thought:
a) Eeeww I would NEVER wear this! ...and then...
b) Hmmm for $10 this might provide nice balance to a stiff black suit with a couple of modifications.

So I went ahead and bought it.  I figured for $10 even if I never wear it, I'll be happy to have the tassels for my craft supplies.  And you know what, it does look decent with a suit (you'll have to trust me since I left my black blazer at the office), or can be pretty fun with a pair of white trousers for a vacation look.
